Sunset on Lake Tahoe by Martin Gollery

Winding Down

One month left of summer. Fall is set to arrive, nearly around the corner. Shocking? We think so, too.
This is always the time of year that signifies change. School starts. Leaves fall. Harvest begins.
Change affects us all in different ways. Some changes we welcome. Others, we brace ourselves. Either way, inevitable change shifts our lives.
How do you prepare for the seasonal shift?

Practitioner Spotlight:
Eve Chenu

massage therapist, yoga teacher and     Aston-Patterning Practitioner

“If exercise is so important for good health, why are so many people getting injured when they do it?”

“Alignment seems central to function, so how does one assess body alignment systematically?”

These were just a couple of the many questions I had when I attended my first Aston Kinetics foundation class. After years of working as a fitness instructor and personal trainer, I was looking for something beyond the continuing education classes that were typically offered in my field.

One of my new clients at the time had asked for my help in exercising safely although she suffered from repeated injuries to her knees and shoulders. She exemplified something I had noticed over time: her overall alignment was clearly a problem, with strong rotation and counter-rotation of her limbs. It was clear to me that this was central to her pain and limitations, but the usual array of “corrective” exercises was no match for how strongly her body pattern was ingrained and how complex it was. I started asking people I knew, massage therapists and Yoga teachers, how I might learn to understand what I was seeing so that I could help my clients more profoundly and effectively. This is how I finally heard of Judith Aston’s work.

Before long I was in my first class with senior faculty member Mark Barber. It was 2002. I felt like a curtain was parting to reveal a vast landscape of knowledge and wisdom related to the functioning of the body. What I learned made so much sense, yet it was a departure from much that I had been taught in the mainstream fitness field.

Over the next few years I studied with Judith Aston and Brian Linderoth. I attended massage school and received my state massage license so that I could practice the hands-on forms of Aston bodywork, not just the movement forms. I had not intended to practice bodywork initially, but once I understood how effective Aston bodywork was in making profound changes, I wanted to do it, too.

I completed the Aston-Patterning certification, Aston Fitness and Aston for Yoga courses, and the advanced Arthro-kinetics bodywork form. I found that the more I studied, the more I appreciated the sophistication, subtlety, and effectiveness of the Aston Kinetics method. My fellow Aston-Patterning practitioner Amanda Skidmore Farasat said it perfectly: “It is invigorating to participate in a system that teaches you how, rather than what, to think, and that supports such a wide range of applications.”

My small private personal training practice has now become a problem solving practice. People typically come to me with injuries and thanks to Aston Kinetics I have a much greater array of tools than I used to in order to assist them. I get very excited about each and every person overcoming unnecessary limitations and reaching for their potential. And it is fun because each person is different and I never get bored!

Aston Kinetics is a paradigm and system, not just a set a techniques. Therefore I am able to utilize what I learned from other methods such as Yoga, Qigong, exercise science, and lymphatic drainage therapy. And the principles can be applied to any sport or activity of daily living.

For me, Aston Kinetics is a personal practice as well as a professional occupation. I have experienced the beneficial effects of regular Aston Kinetics sessions for myself. Over the years I have felt how my body has gained greater ease and well being. Old limitations have been greatly reduced thanks to the intervention of the bodywork I receive regularly from my fellow practitioner Michelle Wald. Using the movement principles I have learned allows me to move in a way that feels healthy and in tune with the physical world.

I believe that everything we do is mediated through the body, even activities that we don’t think of as being fitness related such as grocery shopping, playing with kids, or walking to one’s seat at the concert hall. Therefore it is critical to have ways to support our health and well-being so we can focus on what we love.

This is especially true for me, because I have many varied interests and I am delighted to have tools from Aston Kinetics to support my health so that I can pursue them. I have always been very active. As a child I studied various forms of dance as well as figure skating. This interest naturally led me to fitness training as a profession. I live in Austin, Texas, which is a great place to continue pursuing the physical activities I enjoy: walking, running, cycling, and swimming, as well as Yoga and Qigong. My husband and I enjoy active travel. We especially enjoy long-distance cycling and hiking excursions in various parts of the world. We often go back to France where I was born and grew up. I also have an interest in art and photography and I am always working on some creative project. As a matter of fact, I studied fine arts, with an emphasis in sculpture, in college and graduate school. I am sure my interest in visual observation as well as three-dimensional form was a great preparation for the skills needed as a practitioner of Aston Kinetics.

I now have some answers to my initial questions, as well as answers to many more questions that I had not even considered at the time. I think of body mechanics in a new way, and therefore all those exercise injuries don’t seem so mystifying nor so impossible to overcome. I really feel I have learned to see body patterns in a systematic way. One of the great gifts of this work is the ability to assess by seeing and palpation in a way that is based on skilled perception of the whole body and its parts. This assessment is the foundation that opens the door to making positive changes customized to each person. Aston Kinetics allows me to continue learning from it the more I practice it, so I expect to continue expanding my skills and sharing the work with all who wish to benefit from it.
